The Orton-Gillingham Approach is a structured, systematic, multisensory, and diagnostic-prescriptive approach for the teaching of language skills (including reading, spelling, and handwriting) for students with dyslexia. This course will provide participants with an introduction to the basics of the Orton-Gillingham Approach within a classroom or small group.
Completion of this course and a supervised practicum* will prepare the trainee to apply for OG Classroom Educator Certification through the Orton-Gillingham Academy (OGA). 25 hours of the course are live synchronous sessions through Zoom and 5 hours are asynchronous assignments. Plan to complete 1 day of asynchronous prerequisite assignments prior to the first day of the course.

Dyslexia and reading disorders
The rationale of the Orton-Gillingham Approach
Phonology & phonological awareness
The motor component, orthography of English, and the writing process
Basic phonics for reading and spelling
Intermediate phonics for reading and spelling
Writing and implementing OG lesson plans
General history of the English language and beginning morphology
Informal assessment and diagnostic-prescriptive teaching
Accuracy, automaticity, and fluency
About the Instructor:
Grace Sharma is a credentialed educator in the areas of Early Childhood Education, Special Education, and Pupil Administrative Services. She has been active in the field of education as a teacher, intervention specialist, administrator, and teacher trainer for over 15 years. Grace is a Structured Literacy Dyslexia Specialist through the Center for Effective Reading Instruction (CERI) and a Fellow with the Orton-Gillingham Academy. She is a National LETRS Trainer for Lexia Learning and serves as a Director and Secretary on the Board of the Northern California Branch of the International Dyslexia Association. Grace strives to empower students with their own “toolkit” of strategies to approach daily challenges and become confident, lifelong learners.
